logo

Muscle Relaxers

Carisoprodol, or its generic Soma are muscle relaxers that works by creating a barrier between the nerves and the brain, therefore blocking the sensation of pain.

When using Carisoprodol it’s important to get plenty of rest along with physical therapy to treat the actual injury.

You should never give your prescription medication to someone else to take. Use only as prescribed to the person who it was initially prescribed to. Anyone with drug abuse history should consult with their doctor before taking muscle relaxers. Be sure to put your prescription medication in a secure place where not everyone has access.

If you take Carisoprodol for a long period of time, you may experience withdrawals when you stop taking it. Speak to your doctor before just suddenly stopping the medication. He/she may want to lessen the dosage gradually before stopping all together. Drinking alcohol while taking Carisoprodol can increase drowsiness. Muscle relaxers can have certain side effects such as impairing your reactions and thinking process.

Consult with your doctor before taking Carisoprodol and let him/her know of any allergies you may have to certain medications, or have problems with liver or kidney disease or epilepsy.

logo

Muscle Relaxers

When is it appropriate to use muscle relaxers for arthritis pain? Should you use them long term for maintenance to help control pain and aches from arthritis?

Usually muscle relaxers are prescribed to treat the temporary relief from muscular pain that can affect the spine.

When you suffer from chronic pain and muscle spasm, perhaps due to fibromyalgia, these drugs are taken on a daily basis. Some of these drugs include:

Flexeril
Skelaxin
Carisoprodol (Soma)
Robaxin

If you’re looking for something that will make you less drowsy and can take during the day, Skelaxin would probably the best choice.

Flexeril, although not approved by the FDA for long term use, may be prescribed for nightly use to help the patient acquire stage 4 sleep to be able to feel more rested upon awakening.

Not only will Flexeril be helpful to help fibromyalgia sufferers with sleep, but can also help with pain different from pain relief that those patients get with sleeping better.

Even though these types of drugs are marketed as muscle relaxers, their action is similar to those of an anti-depressant such as Elavil.

Generally, muscle relaxants will have their effectiveness by working through the central nervous system rather than having a direct effect on the skeletal muscle itself.

logo

Muscle Relaxers

Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxer usually prescribed for pain from muscle spams and sprains.

It’s selective action works on the central nervous system. This drug will not relieve ordinary aches and pains but will reduce pain related to a certain set of muscles that have sustained physical injury or trauma.

An ingredient of Carisoprodol is meprobromate, which is a carbomate derivative that is also used in the treatment of anxiety disorders. This muscle relaxer is readily available in tablet form with a prescription from your doctor. It should be taken with food, as it can cause stomach upset.

Carisoprodol is given to patients for temporary relief and will not heal the injured muscle. There must be some other treatment as well such as physical therapy and plenty of rest.

These type drugs work by lessening impulses therefore stopping the muscle from contracting or spasm.

Muscle relaxers are used in two different ways. One would be during surgery as a neuromuscular blocker, allowing a surgeon to temporarily paralyze the esophagus to perform an endoscopy.

The other way muscle relaxers are used is to simply allow muscles to relax. If you are experiencing spacsticity, which causes your muscles to contract and become tight.

When taking any type of muscle relaxers, you should first see your doctor and get a complete medical examination. He will then be better informed as to what is actually causing the problem and can treat it accordingly.
