Just about everyone at some point will experience back pain, so if you’re going through this, you are not alone. Back pain can interrupt daily activities, work schedules and your recreation. There is 50 billion dollars spent by Americans each year on some kind of relief for back pain. This relief can be a prescription for muscle relaxers such as Carisoprodol or non-prescription over the counter ibuprofen.
Back pain is considered a neurological ailment, commonly second to headaches in the US. For those that suffer from back pain, it is fortunate that they will suffer a short term, as back pain usually subsides after a few days.
There are two types of back pain.
Short term back pain or more commonly referred to as acute low back pain will last just a few days. Usually a result of trauma or from arthritis, and is mechanical in nature. You may have caused trauma by:
A sudden jolt to the back
Working around the house (gardening, leave raking)
Sports injury
If you have experienced any of those causes you may feel it by:
Stabbing to shooting pain
Not able to stand up straight
Range of motion or flexibility is impaired
If you choose to ignore acute pain it can develop into a more severe condition.
Pain that lasts more than a few months is usually considered to be chronic. Lower back pain that is considered chronic can be hard in determining the cause.
When suffering acute or chronic back pain, it is best to see your health care provider. They can help to determine the cause and treat it accordingly. Most doctors will prescribe Carisoprodol or Flexeril muscle relaxer to help diminish the pain until the muscle or joint can heal, combining the medication with rest, possible exercise and physical therapy.
Treating chronic back pain can be done with or without surgery. Most doctors will opt for trying non-surgical methods to treat chronic back pain. However, when it is caused by infection, tumor or nerve root, surgery may be necessary immediately to relieve pain and prevent further complications.
There are several ways to treat back pain without surgery, such as:
Medications such as muscle relaxers
Devices
Injections
Hot or cold packs
Exercise
Alternative therapy
Behavioral modification
You can use hot or cold and sometimes a combination of the two to relieve back pain.
When using heat it can alleviate muscle spasms, alter sensation of pain, and increase the supply of oxygen that blood brings to the back.
Using cold packs on the back will help by reducing inflammation. Even though you may experience pain from the cold pack itself, it will help to numb the deep pain. Using either one or both of these techniques will not cure the actually cause of your chronic back pain, but will relieve the pain temporarily.
Exercising should be discussed with your doctor as it is not usually recommended for chronic back pain. However, the right form of exercise may be helpful in specific causes. They would include, stretching, flexion, extension and aerobic exercises.
Suffering from whiplash can be painful and you may need to seek medical attention. Whiplash can occur from a car accident or a sudden flexion or extension to the neck area. Commonly you will feel back pain, headaches and dizziness. You can start feeling these symptoms immediately or they can occur after a few days from the injury.
Usually this can be treated with muscle relaxers, physical therapy, or non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Recovering from whiplash usually takes several months.
Whiplash is often referred to as neck strain or neck sprain. It involves a soft tissue injury to the neck area. This type of injury is a variety of symptoms that will happen after doing damage to the neck from sudden impact.
You may also injure:
Discs
Ligaments
Nerve roots
Inter vertebral joints
Cervical muscles
Whether your symptoms occur immediately following the injury or are delayed for several days, they may include:
Back or shoulder pain
Neck pain
Stiffness of the neck
Headaches
Sensations such as prickling or burning
Muscle or ligament injury
Dizziness
Also, some people will deal with psychological, somatic or cognitive issues such as:
Depression
Disturbances with sleep
Irritability
Nervousness
Loss of memory
Fatigue
Lack of concentration
Speak to your doctor if you feel you have injured your neck from a sudden impact. After a physical examination he/she may prescribe a muscle relaxer to help you with the pain until you have recovered from whiplash.
If you are having muscle spasms that are caused by an injury or other muscle related problems, a prescription muscle relaxers such as Flexeril or Carisoprodol can help relieve the spasms and pain. This prescription has been approved for adults and adolescents that are 15 years old or older.
Although it is uncertain how Flexeril or Carisoprodol works to relieve the muscle spasm, it is however known that it works in the brain stem not on the muscle itself. It will help with muscle spasms within the muscle but not problems within the spinal cord or brain.
Whenever you decide to take any prescription medication, it is best to speak with your health care provider and let them know of any other medications you are currently taking. This would also include any vitamins and non-prescriptions as well. If you have any other medical conditions be assured to let your doctor know. So speak to your doctor about taking prescription Flexeril or Carisoprodol to help relieve muscle spasms, they can be quite effective.
There are possible side effects from taking muscle relaxers such as dizziness, fatigue and drowsiness. Usually these symptoms go away after a short period of time and the benefits of taking a muscle relaxer can out weigh the temporary side effects. This will allow your muscle to heal without suffering through the pain while you seek physical therapy and will allow you to get plenty of rest.
Carisoprodol, or its generic Soma are muscle relaxers that works by creating a barrier between the nerves and the brain, therefore blocking the sensation of pain.
When using Carisoprodol it’s important to get plenty of rest along with physical therapy to treat the actual injury.
You should never give your prescription medication to someone else to take. Use only as prescribed to the person who it was initially prescribed to. Anyone with drug abuse history should consult with their doctor before taking muscle relaxers. Be sure to put your prescription medication in a secure place where not everyone has access.
If you take Carisoprodol for a long period of time, you may experience withdrawals when you stop taking it. Speak to your doctor before just suddenly stopping the medication. He/she may want to lessen the dosage gradually before stopping all together. Drinking alcohol while taking Carisoprodol can increase drowsiness. Muscle relaxers can have certain side effects such as impairing your reactions and thinking process.
Consult with your doctor before taking Carisoprodol and let him/her know of any allergies you may have to certain medications, or have problems with liver or kidney disease or epilepsy.
Having any of these conditions doesn’t necessarily mean you can not take Carisoprodol, however, your doctor may need to adjust the dosage and require further testing to assure your safety in taking this muscle relaxer.
